Micky van de Ven Double Ends Everton's Run at New Home Ground

Micky van de Ven found the net on two occasions as Tottenham extended their winning streak in away games in the Premier League and delivered the Toffees their initial loss at their new home.

The Toffees were undefeated in their last five matches at their recently opened stadium at the dockside location, having left Goodison Park behind after 133 years at the conclusion of the previous campaign.

But Spurs captain Van de Ven struck on two occasions from set-pieces in the opening 45 minutes to place their strong form at risk, and they were unable to mount a comeback before Pape Matar Sarr - set up by former Toffees attacker the Brazilian - headed home a final goal to seal the victory.

The Everton defender believed he had equalized the scores a short while after the defender's first goal, directing a bullet header past Guglielmo Vicario from an set-piece.

The Portuguese striker, in the meantime, missed a handful of opportunities, while Vicario made a succession of excellent saves to guarantee Tottenham went five away games without defeat in the Premier League.

But the video assistant referee stepped in, instructing Craig Pawson to review the score on the screen and the referee decided that the winger and the attacker were in offside positions and had impeded with the Tottenham goalkeeper.

This victory moves the manager's side up to third in the division, five points off local foes and leaders Arsenal.

Everton remain in 14th position and are half a dozen points ahead of the relegation zone.

Spurs breakdown: Van de Ven fulfils duties at each end of the field

After a uninspiring weekday performance in the Champions League against Monaco, where they managed a mere attempts on goal, Frank chose the French striker in attack instead of ex-Everton forward Richarlison.

The new arrival was failed to influence the game before being substituted for the substitute after an hour on the field, but it emerged he wasn't needed in the final outcome.

Centre-back Van de Ven converted into an offensive threat to be feared.

Tottenham's opening strike came from a cleverly executed corner routine, with the midfielder heading the ball toward the six-yard box for an free Van de Ven to head home.

And the captain - filling in as captain in the Argentine's absence - notched his second in first-half stoppage time as he rose above the England keeper to nod in.

Van de Ven was just as impressive in defensive duties, combining well with his defensive colleague as the pair dealt excellently with the numerous deliveries sent their way by the opposition.

Everton analysis: Everton lacking finishing touch

The club's recent stadium had been a fortress, but it seems the freshness may have faded somewhat and supporters headed to the gates after the midfielder's third for Spurs.

The break in Everton's unbeaten home run will not be a major worry for the manager, but their attacking woes will be.

The forward and Thierno Barry - the Toffees' pair of established centre-forwards - had netted only a single goal combined before the weekend's outing.

And they were unable to add to that poor record on a wet and gloomy night on in Liverpool.

The striker's performance was epitomized when he chose to bicycle-kick a clear chance from near the goal, even with having space and opportunity to reposition for a simpler shot that would have tested the keeper.

The substitute, too, failed to influence the game after replacing Beto in the second half.

It was not for a lack of chance. The majority of the home side's attacks came through the winger and Ndiaye, who tirelessly delivered dangerous crosses into the Spurs penalty area.
